About this event - Bicycle Film Festival (BFF) has already attracted more than 1 million visitors worldwide. The festival sees the bicycle as the driving force for urban modern life. And to celebrate that, BFF crisscrosses the most important cultural movements of the last decade. With different films, artists and performers each time. Past editions have included filmmaker Spike Jonze, artist Ai Wei Wei and music artists like Erykah Badu on the impressive lineup.

Bicycle Film Festival Amsterdam 2022

Selection of international films
During the Bicycle Film Festival you can choose from 60 short and feature length films. Both by renowned directors and up-and-coming talent. The selection is the result of worldwide screenings for which more than 1,000 films were submitted.

Join all weekend or choose a specific film program
The Bicycle Film Festival Amsterdam will be celebrated from December 2 to 4 in Move Amsterdam. On Friday the festival opens with a special concert by Amedeo and Simone Pace, who are part of the legendary New York rock band; Blonde Redhead. They will perform a live score to the film Stars and Water Carriers by Jørgen Leth. Tickets will be offered separately for this opening night concert.

Throughout the weekend, Ride Out will host special bike rides, 7 unique film programs will be offered and you can visit Wils Bakery Café for a delicious menu next to your planned film session. Each day will also end with a festive drink at Ride Out. A unique festival where film, food and culture come together.

Opening Night
Amedeo and Simone Pace from legendary New York rock band, Blonde Redhead perform a live score to an adaptation to the 1974 cycling film, STARS AND WATER CARRIERS by Jørgen Leth. STARS AND WATER CARRIERS is about the the 1973 Giro D’Italia. Jørgen Leth has made 40 films over his celebrated career. Three of these films are some of the most important cycling films ever made.

SOCIAL RIDE HOSTED BY RIDE OUT
For the Bicycle Film Festival Ride Out organizes a special social ride on road bikes where everyone is welcome. The ride is led by Ride Out's ride leaders.
You will gather at Ride Out at 9:30 am for a good cup of coffee. At 10:00 am the group will leave for a ride of about 60 kilometers around Amsterdam and you will return to Ride Out around 12:30 pm. Just in time if you still want to join the first screening of the Bicycle Film Festival: Kampala Cycling Couriers produced by Anna van der Breggen. You ride at a pace of about 28 kilometers per hour. UNION x MVDRV ARCHITECTS – AMSTERDAM BIKE TOUR

Union is making e-bikes available especially for this tour so you can easily explore the city. With a tour guide, you will make a 35 kilometer bike tour past works by MVDRV Architects, known for the Markthal and the Depot for Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
Cycle along Amsterdam West to see the WOZOCO building from 1997, check the Studio Thonik building from 2001 and climb the steps of the Valley building from 2022. A beautiful tour of iconic Amsterdam buildings! Sign up for free via the 'order tickets' button.

This feature documentary follows the startup of one of the first bicycle messenger services in Eastern Africa. With the support of an experienced Dutch bike messenger, four Ugandan cyclists begin building the business, but along the way their commitment and courage are tested. Preceded by two new short films celebrating women overcoming adversity.

KAMPALA CYCLING COURIERS

This documentary follows one of the first bicycle messenger services in Eastern Africa. A group of four bike messengers commit themselves to the start up. With the support of experienced Dutch bike messenger, Joeri Scholte, who settles down in Kampala, they try to build up a sustainable business model and organization structure. After a promising start of Kampala Cycling Couriers, the bike messengers face challenges and the tensions between them rise. Their commitment and courage are tested. Towards the end of Joeri’s three month stay in Kampala, the future of the courier business suddenly seems a bit uncertain. Executive produced by Dutch cycling legend, Anna van der Breggen.

Over 8 hours of self recorded footage was shot by Rare DM from a GoPro while riding her bike during the toughest, loneliest moments of the pandemic lockdown, then stitched together with footage captured by Jordan Fuller. Rare DM is Brooklyn-based singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Erin Hoagg. Rare DM has become a favorite on TikTok, performing at SXSW, Verboden Festival, Cold Waves X and Synthicide in 2022.

Join us for an afternoon where we look back on Le Tour de France Femmes and discuss the future of women's cycling.

The inaugural edition of Le Tour de France Femmes was a historic moment for women's cycling! We’re celebrating this pivotal moment in women’s cycling with some of the leaders in the sport. Champions on the road and drivers of change: Reigning World Time Trial Champion Ellen van Dijk, former professional cyclist and co-founder of The Cyclists’ Alliance Iris Slappendel, Head of Flanders Classics Women Maja Leye, ultra racer Nancy Ankiny and Dr. Meg Fisher 11x World Champion and Paralympic Gold Medalist pioneering para-cycling in gravel and mountain events. The panel discussion will be hosted by Jose Been. During this afternoon, we will celebrate success and milestones, but also discuss the opportunities that remain.

More than a million people die in traffic-related crashes each year worldwide. Half of those deaths are pedestrians and cyclists. This film follows the global, citizen-led fight to make our streets safer while giving an honest, realtime look at human behavior on our street. US road safety statistics picked up on a troubling trend: more and more pedestrians and cyclists were being killed on American roads. Digging deep into the root causes of traffic violence, an array of experts including street historian Peter Norton, city planner Jeff Speck, urban design expert Mikael Colville-Andersen, and advocates working to make their communities safer weigh in on how to prevent the loss of human life on our streets worldwide.

THE EAST TEXAS SHOWDOWN

The East Texas Showdown is a bikepacking event founded in 2021 by Patrick Farnsworth, the host of the Bikes or Death podcast. The event includes two distance options: the 380-mile SHOWdown or the 280-mile SLOWdown. This film provides a glimpse into the second annual event in 2022 consisting of 94 participants and blazing fast times.

ONBOARD THE TRANSCONTINENTAL RACE

The Transcontinental Race is 4000km across Europe by bicycle without assistance. It is rarely a race against fellow competitors. To ride the TCR is to explore who you become at the side of a road in the Alps or the Balkans, low on sleep, lucidity, hygiene and any notion of comfort. Cyclists roll over rough tarmac sixteen or eighteen hours a day, finding what exists beyond fatigue and exhaustion. This documentary is filmed during 3 races from 2016 to 2018, through the eyes of the photographers: James Robertson, Camille Mcmillan, Mike Hall, Anna Haslock, and Matthieu, a cyclist who fights a personal battle simply to complete the race.

About BFF

The birth of the Bicycle Film Festival is an extraordinary story. Founder Brendt Barbur was hit by a bus in New York on his bicycle. But he had to and would turn that negative experience into a positive one. So in 2001, Barbur started the Bicycle Film Festival, as a platform to celebrate cycling through film, music and art. The festival has since grown into an international success with editions in over 100 cities.
