Imagine... A Le Mans race car, but with windshield wipers, airbags and fog lights. You can compare the Porsche 919 Street a little to that. A pure race car for public roads. With 900 horsepower and a weight of only 900 kilos. Foolish idea? Yet Porsche went for it.
The Porsche 919 Street is based on the 919 Hybrid, with which Porsche competed in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans. That car was made specifically for the track and never intended to meet the demands of legislators or the wishes of "ordinary" customers. Yet in 2017, Porsche started this mission impossible. The 919 Street would get the same turbocharged 2.0 four-cylinder with electric motor and also retained the aerodynamic body with shark fin.
But, in the end, all the high-performance racing technology proved too complex after all. It took a team of specialized technicians 45 minutes just to start the car. And to fly them in for every drive....
Because of this practical shortcoming, the Porsche 919 Street unfortunately remains a dream. But the first and only concept model is now on display at Move Amsterdam. So keep on dreaming.
